What Breed Is My Cat? How to Actually Find Out

Here is the fact most breed articles skip: roughly 95 percent of cats are not a breed. They are domestic shorthairs or longhairs, wonderful cats whose ancestors were never selectively bred. So "what breed is my cat?" really means "which breeds does my cat resemble, and is there real pedigree in there?"
That question has good answers. Here is how to get them.
Start with a photo scan
A visual identifier compares your cat's ear shape, eye color, coat pattern, muzzle, and body type against every recognized breed at once and names the closest matches in seconds. For pedigree cats it is usually accurate. For non-pedigree cats it tells you the resemblance, which is the honest version of the answer.
Scan two or three photos in daylight, face-on and from the side. Matches that repeat across photos are meaningful; a one-off match is noise.
Read the traits that actually distinguish breeds
- Face shape: flat (Persian), wedge (Siamese, Oriental), round (British Shorthair)
- Ears: folded (Scottish Fold), curled back (American Curl), oversized (Sphynx, Oriental), tufted (Maine Coon)
- Coat: hairless (Sphynx), rex curls (Devon, Cornish Rex), double plush (British Shorthair), long shaggy (Maine Coon, Norwegian Forest)
- Body: cobby and heavy (Persian, British), long and tubular (Siamese), massive (Maine Coon)
- Color pattern: colorpoint (Siamese line), ticked (Abyssinian), spotted (Bengal, Egyptian Mau)
Patterns are not breeds
Tabby, tortoiseshell, calico, tuxedo: these are coat patterns, not breeds, and they appear across dozens of breeds and in most non-pedigree cats. If an identification result surprises you by naming a "pattern" you expected to be a breed, that is the tool being accurate, not wrong.
When paperwork is the only proof
A pedigree is a registration document from a cat registry (TICA, CFA, FIFe). Without papers, no photo, vet, or DNA test can make a cat officially a breed. Cat DNA tests exist but read ancestry markers, not registry status, and for most non-pedigree cats they return "domestic mix", which you already knew.
The practical path: scan for resemblance, enjoy the answer, and only chase paperwork if you were told the cat came from a breeder.
