What Breed Is My Puppy? How to Identify It (and Guess Adult Size)

• Coat color pattern: merle, brindle, and tri-color patterns are visible early and come from limited breed pools
• Paw size relative to body: oversized paws signal a large adult
• Tail set and shape: a tail curling over the back shows up early in spitz-type dogs
• Skin folds: wrinkly puppies (Shar-Pei, Mastiff lines) are wrinkly from birth
• Ear cartilage: heavy, thick ears usually stay dropped; thin ones may stand later

Puppy coats are almost all soft and fluffy, so coat texture means little before 6 months. Ear position is unreliable until cartilage sets, German Shepherd puppies famously have floppy ears for months. And color can lighten or darken dramatically; many black puppies gray out, many light ones deepen.

Photo AI works on puppies, but give it the best evidence: a clear front shot of the face plus a side shot showing body proportions, in daylight. Then rescan every few weeks. The matches will converge as adult features settle, and the scan history becomes a record of your puppy growing up.

A rough rule vets use: a puppy is around half its adult weight at 4 months for small breeds, and around half at 5 to 6 months for large breeds. Double the 4-month weight for a small dog, or the 5.5-month weight for a large one, and you land in the right range.

Breed matters more than any formula, which is another reason the breed question is worth answering early: it sets your expectations for food, crate size, and training needs.
