How to Digitize Old Photo Albums With Just Your Phone

Printed photos have one copy, and that copy is aging in an album that could be lost to one flood, fire, or house move. Digitizing used to mean a flatbed scanner and a lost weekend per album. A phone plus a careful technique now does an album in an hour or two, at quality that honestly rivals casual scanning.
Set up once, capture fast
- Pick a spot near a big window with indirect daylight (no direct sun on the photos).
- Lay a dark towel or sheet on a table as your background.
- Clean your phone's camera lens; a smudged lens softens hundreds of captures.
- Turn off flash. Turn on the grid so you can keep the phone parallel.
- If photos are behind album plastic, take the ones that matter out; plastic glare ruins captures.
The capture rhythm
One photo at a time, phone directly above, fill the frame, shoot, next. Do not chase perfection per shot; consistent-and-quick beats slow-and-fussy for a whole album. An in-app scanner with auto-crop and straightening keeps the rhythm going, since you skip manual cropping entirely.
For photos stuck to album pages (the old sticky albums), do not force them off. Capture them in place; a straight-on shot of a stuck photo is far better than a torn original.
