A generation of family history is sitting in shoeboxes and albums, fading a little more every year. The good news: the phone in your pocket is now enough to rescue it. No flatbed scanner, no Photoshop skills, no mailing originals to a service.
The workflow has two halves: capturing the print well, and restoring the capture. Both matter.
Capture the print properly
An in-app scanner does the fiddly parts, edge detection, cropping, and straightening, but the light and angle are still your job. Thirty seconds of care here beats any amount of AI later.
- Work near a window with indirect daylight; never use flash on a glossy print.
- Lay the photo flat on a dark, plain surface.
- Hold the phone directly above, parallel to the photo, so nothing skews.
- Watch for your own shadow and for glare; shift your angle slightly until the surface is even.
- Fill the frame with the photo but leave a small border for auto-crop.

- Soft focus and print grain: detail gets sharpened

The face question, answered honestly
